Song of the Day #44 - it's so cold in this house

I know it's only 40 degrees, but I'm cold.  I live in LA, it's not supposed to get cold here... and after being here for a month you start to think 60 degrees is pretty chilly.  Further, I don't have heat in my bedroom...only a huge sliding glass door making it easier for the cold air to get in...  So yeah, I'm cold.  And whenever I'm cold...I sing this song.

Bloc Party - Like Eating Glass

ps - them oscars were boooooring.

Song of the Day #43 - except you are an actual jerk

One of my absolute favorite songs of the last however many years.  It's long, so bear with it...but geez, it's great.  The synth "orgasm" just after 3 minutes....is just...inexplicable.  Yes.

LCD Soundsystem - Dance Yrself Clean

ps - i prolly like this song too much.

Song of the Day #41 - hold on to my hand, never let go, never let go

I'm having trouble with these guys, because the songs of theirs I like, I REALLY like.  However, there's several songs that bore me and I'm just very blah about...at least on their older album, Ode to Sunshine.  This is from their newer album, History From Below, and falls into that "like" category I mentioned just a few sentences ago.  I need to listen to more of that cd.  I'm sure you don't care about any of this.

Delta Spirit - Bushwick Blues

ps - unknown is pretty silly

Song of the Day #38 - pour a little gas, spark up your lighter

No, it's not a hip-hop cover of Creed's "Higher"...though that would be kinda of amazing...  It's just J. Cole doing his thing...simple and smooth.

J. Cole - Higher

ps - in the world of recent r rated rom-coms: going the distance > no strings attached

Song of the Day #37 - ain't got nobody, baby, i can call my shorty

Bob Schneider reminds me of Austin.  He is also awesome.  This is not your typical Schneider song, but a helluva sing-along!  I'm seeing him tonight for the 2nd time ever...which is sort of ridiculous considering he plays in Austin on a weekly basis...  It only took me moving to LA to finally see him live...

Bob Schneider - Mudhouse

ps - my body is not happy with me right now...

Song of the Day #36 - there's no sea left for me

Sunday morning groove time.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - Otherside (Remix)

ps - the original version of this actually samples chili peppers' 'otherside'...i kinda prefer this one.

I really enjoy whistling this song...except I can't really whistle.

Local Natives - Who Knows, Who Cares

ps - all i can think of right now is fred armisen imitating joy behart on an snl parody of the view and saying "so what, who cares" as he shrugs his shoulders.

Song of the Day #28 - and when it was over, I woke up alone

I've had songs from Gaslight Anthem's album American Slang  come on in the background a ton of times and always tell myself I need to give the whole album a close listen because it sounds pretty good.  However, I never do. I really need to get on that.

The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang

ps - big boi killed it last night, cee-lo was kinda disappointing...

Song of the Day #24 - oh, tell the bartender!

I'm a huge Ted Leo fan, but this song really didn't work for me at first.  So much so that I would immediately skip to the next song every time it came up.  I finally gave it some more listens, though, and maybe on the 5th or 6th try something finally clicked...and now I kinda love it.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Bottled in Cork

ps - i just ate a quad steak burrito from taco bell.  four times the steaaakkkkk!

Song of the Day #23 - am i rising up?

I don't know anything about this band other than that they're Canadian and this song rocks.  That's good enough for me.

Hey Rosetta! - Yer Spring

ps - the lead singer kinda looks like will forte from certain angles.

Song of the Day #22 - are these times contagious?

Remember when people used to actually buy movie soundtracks?  And when music videos for songs on a soundtrack had scenes from the movie?  Those were the days.  I listened to soundtracks all the time back in high school.....Can't Hardly Wait, American Pie, Baseketball, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Godzilla, The Faculty, Scream 2, and Empire Records, immediately come to mind as being pretty sweet.  The Varsity Blues soundtrack was another in regular rotation and with that being a football movie and it being Super Bowl Sunday and all, I figured I'd pick a song from that for today. It was tough to choose because there's so many good options: Foo Fighters, Green Day, Third Eye Blind, Black Lab, Janus Stark, Loudmouth, Fastball... But I think I'm going to go with a little Collective Soul.

Collective Soul - Run

ps - i don't want....your life.
pss - packers to win AND cover

Song of the Day #20 - dites moi que fout la science

One of my favorite Saturday Night Live sketches of the season is Les Jeunes de Paris.  It's a very simple premise, really...Taran Killam sees Emma Stone in a French cafe, tries to hit on her, and they proceed to have a dance-off.  That's all there is to it.  It is totally random, completely off-beat, ridiculously silly, entirely in French, and I absolutely love it...I wish SNL did more stuff like this.  Also, the song featured in the sketch is pretty awesome...so here you go:

Camille - Ta Douleur

If you haven't seen the sketch, here is a really shoddy version by someone who video recorded it off their tv and put it on youtube. (hulu is lame and doesn't ever carry sketches with songs in them because they'd have to secure the rights)

ps - i don't care if you don't like the sketch

Song of the Day #18 - just yell out my name, baby

One of my favorite songs of 2010.  Listening to this song without having ever seen what the members of Minus the Bear look like, you'd never guess these guys look like what they look like...

Minus the Bear - My Time

ps - i have, on several occasions, been noticed dancing to this song in my chair in my cube at work and been called out on it...

Song of the Day #17 - even if they turn the lights out the show is goin’ on

Even though the new Lupe track, "Words I Never Said", dropped tonight, and I'm liking it more with each listen, I'm going with the single before this one.  I still don't understand how Lupe isn't one of the biggest rappers/hip hop artist out there.  Maybe it's because he doesn't really rap about bitches, hos, and money...but outside of Kanye, there's no rapper/hip hop artist I'd rather listen to.  He's got the charisma, he's got the appealing voice, he's got the lyrics, and he's got some sweet beats.  Here, the Modest Mouse sample just kills.  Can't wait for his 3rd album, Lasers, to FINALLY come out in March!

Lupe Fiasco - The Show Goes On

ps - i have a feeling Lupe will be a regular on the sotd
