Keeping the Sundance theme alive...sorta. My first inclination was to feature another song from (500) Days of Summer, but that's too easy. Instead, here's a song from a non-Sundance movie, The Disappearance of Alice Creed. with a slight connection to this year's festival. One of the stars of Alice Creed is the amazingly awesome Eddie Marsan (another is the amazingly beautiful Gemma Arterton, but that's beside the point) and he has a role in a movie I caught here yesterday called Tyrannosaur. Really good flick.
Anyway, today's song played during the closing credits of Alice Creed. I remember pulling out my phone at my seat to check some e-mails right after the movie ended and this song started playing...within 10 seconds I was hooked. I actually sat through the entire credits to hear the whole thing. Pretty haunting...love it.
Cathy Davey - Holy Moly
ps - i feel like this post makes no sense. i apologize. i'm averaging probably less than 4 hours of sleep the last 3 nights...
pss - the disappearance of alice creed is a good movie
We're going old school today....this really takes me back. It popped up in a movie I saw today here at Sundance called I Melt With You starring Rob Lowe, Thomas Jane, and Jeremy Piven. It's an absolute mess of a movie that thinks it's being extremely profound and important when it's not even close. I would never recommend it to anyone, BUT...the soundtrack was pretty awesome, and I can point to a few individual things I kinda dug. I'm actually kind of glad I saw it. Regardless, enjoy some Filter!
Filter - Hey Man, Nice Shot
ps - today's sundance movie scores (in order of viewing): I Melt With You (4/10), The Lie (6/10), Terri (7.5/10), Take Shelter (8.5/10), The Oregonian (1/10)
Movies, red bulls, movies and chapped lips...that pretty much sums what's in store for me these next 4 days here in Park City. Oh, Sundance...how I love thee. No idea if I'll do more songs while I'm here, but I figured as long as I do, I'd try to keep it Sundance themed.
Soooo... I present to you a song from my favorite movie I've seen at Sundance since I started coming 2 years ago... (500) Days of Summer.
Wolfmother - Vagabond
ps - In The Loop is probably my 2nd favorite
pss - looks like this is some homemade video...i did not watch it, so i cannot vouch for it it was tough to find a non-live version!
So this ain't typically my style, but I love this song. Think Mumford and Sons on speed, crack....and about 47 Red Bulls.
Trampled by Turtles - Wait So Long
ps - speed and crack are different things, right? i forgot all the stuff i was taught in D.A.R.E...
pss - thanks to casey p for posting this on the facebook or i would've never found it.
I'm totally tardy to the party on these guys. They're just one of those bands I always heard the name of, but never took the time to listen to. Now I can't wait to explore their catalog (that's what she said!). This one's legit.
White Rabbits - Percussion Gun
ps - yep, i just said "tardy for the party"...punch me now.
What's cooler than chick rockers?...HOT chick rockers! (unfortunately, you don't get to see since this youtube video is only the song...........sooooo see below for a pic...cause i'm a giver...i give.)
Sleigh Bells - Rill Rill
Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells
ps - speaking of chick rockers, karen o scares the crap outta me
Kid Cudi is pretty divisive, but I dig him. I still need to give the "new" album a good listen, but I like what I've heard to date. This one sounds like a lost Weezer song.
Kid Cudi - Erase Me (feat. Kanye West)
ps - i guess i'll go packers and steelers to win. but those are the obvious picks...
I don't know. For no particular reason, I was just in the mood for some Stereophonics when I got home tonight....about 2 hours later than originally planned...and when I typed "Stereophonics" into my winamp (that's right, winamp!), this song was the one I chose to listen to among the results. It's got one of those eerie, yet infectious builds and sticks with you for a bit afterward. Give it a couple spins if you're not feeling it at first.
Somehow every Pandora or Slacker Radio station I have ever made winds up playing Kate Nash at one point or another. I don't know what it is, but with every "like", "dislike", "thumbs up", "heart" or "ban" that I enter on my stations, those crazy algorithms eventually decide that I should be listening to Kate Nash. Sometimes I wonder what that says about me. But at the end of the day, I'm perfectly OK with it...'cause I dig me some Kate Nash. Good work, algorithms!

Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand
ps - the video has some sweet cameos.
pss - i hate football.
There's little that's better than a great "chant song" to sing at the top of your lungs while you're coasting down the highway at 70 MPH on a Sunday afternoon...or in my case, while stopping and starting at 5 MPH on the highway on a Wednesday night at 11pm when there is absolutely, positively no reason for there to be any sort of traffic whatsoever (I love you, LA). And thank you, The Wombats, for giving us just that.
I discovered these guys randomly during SxSW '07 when I walked into a bar at about 1:15AM on a Wednesday night and they were playing on stage. Now they are one of my favorite bands...and I randomly even partied with them one night during SxSW '08. But just the fact that this band exists still sort of blows my mind...I mean, I have an irrational love for wombats and probably just as equally an irrational love (and hate) for girls (maybe I should say, "women"..."love for girls" sounds kinda creepy), and this band, called The Wombats, sings pretty much exclusively about their love (and hate) of girls (women)...it's a magic combination. It's almost like they're inside my head... They've recently put out some new stuff, but we're gonna stick with a classic today.
Sing with me: THIS IS NO...BRIDGET JONES! THIS IS NO...BRIDGET! BRIDGET!
The Wombats - Kill the Director
ps - blew both games yesterday, but here goes...NFL picks: bears over seahawks (it's 21-0 nothing right now..i'm going out on a limb on this one...), pats over jets
So I figure we keep the dance party going with this little ditty by Fitz & The Tantrums. It's pretty rare to find a song that is both this fun and angry at the same time. I don't make nearly enough to have ever had a girl date me just for my money, but I sorta wish I did because I think it'd be awesome to yell out, "oh man! this song is totally about me!" if it ever came on. And then you're out there on the dance floor belting it out at the top of your lungs with a sense of purpose cause you're actually singing it AT someone in particular. You feel just as much rage as the lead singer. MONEYGRABBER!
Fitz & The Tantrums - MoneyGrabber
ps - NFL picks: ravens over the steelers, falcons over the packers
Rather than just having this be another never-updated blog wasting away on the interwebs (of which I now have 2), I figured I might as well try and give this a purpose...until I get lazy again and abandon it in 5 days... So for the foreseeable future, I'm just going to use this as a forum to try and re-start up the Song of the Day deal I used to do oh so long ago (for full disclosure, I was bullied to start doing this again after seeing some friends from high school recently....they threatened me with baseball bats, torture chambers and the kidnapping of my eventual first-born). No promises on daily updates or even every other day (bi-daily?), but I'll try to do something weekly, at the minimum....ok, at least bi-weekly, promise!...maybe...
So in the interests of sharing the love (and the safety of my future son, 'lil Mookie), here we go...
OK, well I was having trouble picking an appropriate song for the first entry, so I decided to just go with what might be my favorite band I've discovered in the past year and a half, Hockey (yep, like the sport...except way better). I had quite a tough time picking a single song to feature, as well, so in continuing my tradition of avoiding dealing with difficult decisions, this first edition of the Frazier Approved Song of the Day is going to have not 1, not 2, but 3 certifiably awesome songs! I feel like Oprah.
I'm not gonna get too much into anything about them, but if you ever have a chance to see them live, DO IT!..and bring your dancing shoes.
Hockey - Song Away
Hockey - Too Fake
and probably my favorite by them...
Hockey - Put The Game Down
And with that, I bid you adieu.
ps - I have no interest in making this about discovering the latest, little-heard indie song, but rather just sharing music I like old and new...so expect a little bit of everything here...except the Black Eyed Peas and Blue October.
pss - Most entries will likely be accompanied with very little commentary/lame attempts at humor. You're welcome.
pss - love my woodlandsposse!
