I wish these guys were bigger here... I think their biggest claim to fame in the States is being featured in the Charlie St. Cloud trailer (though not with this song). But maybe that's ok. I keep missing them when they come to town...I've really got to make it a point to go next time. They'll be opening for the Foos on a few dates later this year.
Biffy Clyro - The Captain
ps - i still haven't seen bridesmaids or pirates. i feel way behind.
I'm going to Austin! So that calls for some Austin-themed music. I should probably be putting a song from Okkervil's new album, but I still haven't listened to it. Love this one, though...love a lot of their stuff. And they're from Austin...so it goes pretty well with the whole "Austin theme" I'm going for...
I first heard these guys at SxSW one year and thought they were one of the most, boring lifeless bands I'd ever seen. Maybe it was just the couple songs I was there for, but they just stood there looking extremely lifeless and depressed. It's possible they were trying to show what uber-hipsters they are (as those are two cruciual tenants of hipster-dom), but I really had no interest in ever looking into them again. Imagine my surprise when I heard this song and went to check who the artist is... It's a nice little ditty, and enough to get me to forgive them for the suckfest that was their SxSW performance.
Noah and the Whale - L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.
ps - i really have nothing against hipsters, either. i apologize if it comes off that way.
This is one of those songs that I don't remember ever getting or knowing about, but it somehow found its way on to my computer and randomly came up on my playlist one day. And I'm glad it did.
Guillemots - Trains to Brazil
ps - everything must go was a pleasant little movie with a nice subdued performance from ferrel, but overall...nothing special.
I'm not sure what these guys have been up to lately, but I adore their first album, Vehicles and Animals. Then, they progressed (regressed?) into essentially a wannabe Coldplay clone and I totally lost interest. One of these days I'll have to check back in and see whats going on, but in the meantime, this one still does the job for me.
I miss Scrubs. One of my favorite shows of all time introduced me to some pretty great music. This is one of them...
Guided By Voices - Hold on Hope
ps - though i'd probably miss scrubs more if they hadn't had such a heinous final season that left a really bad taste in my mouth and completely destroyed the impact of the episode that served so perfectly as a "series finale" the year before.
I don't think these guys even have an album yet, but the few songs I've heard from them are pretty rad. This one sounds like it's straight out of the 50's....or even something the Supremes would have sung. It makes me want to slow-dance at a prom....in a totally not creepy way. Dreeeeeeeaaammmmy.
Cults - You Know What I Mean
ps - it only took me 3 hours, but i finally found the title to my car....well, deceased car.
Love this guy. He used to be in a metal group called Test Icicles and once they broke up, he went on to do his own thing at the other end of the music spectrum...dreamy pop...under the Lightspeed Champion moniker. Got to see him at SxSW '08 and he was pretty great. Just to be obnoxious, I'm going with his 10-minute epic...
Lightspeed Champion - Midnight Surprise
ps - and the little mushroom people of nova scotia are screaming with horror!
