Listening to the Arctic Monkeys first album today made me remember how truly fantastic it is. This is my favorite off it. Fun fact - 8 of the 13 songs on the album are under 3 minutes. This is not one of them.
Arctic Monkeys - A Certain Romance
ps - i'm not quite sure what's going on in the murder storyline, but otherwise, i'm really digging the hour on bbcamerica
Apparently this dude used to work at Google and quit to pursue a hip hop career. Haven't heard anything else from him, but if the rest of his stuff is as infectious as this, I'll be a fan. Also love the Fitz and the Tantrums sample.
Welp, we've made it to 200. Still amazed I'm updating this on a regular basis. If I make it to 300, I'll be just as amazed. Anyway, to commemorate the milestone, I think I'll yet again (like #100) post one of my absolute favorite songs that I think was/is under-appreciated from the mid-90s. OLP hasn't quite been the same ever since the release of Gravity, but I still think their first 4 albums are all pretty damn fantastic. And while Clumsy was my favorite album of theirs for quite a while, their first album, Naveed, has since surpassed it in my eyes (and ears). This is such a good song.
Yep, this is the rapper from Entourage that Turtle signs. I have no idea if he's still on the show since I stopped watching a few years ago, but I'm definitely digging his album. Here's the title track.
Saigon - The Greatest Story Never Told
ps - this sample reminds me of ghostface's 'the champ'
I recently discovered this on turntable.fm. People keep saying they sound like My Chemical Romance...and maybe they do to a certain point...but I think they've got a pretty unique feel to them. I really want to investigate their back-catalog.
LOVE these guys...sad that they're no longer around. The only time I got to see them live, Mike Birbiglia opened for them. Yes, the comedian. It was pretty awesome.
This has sat in my song of the day waitlist for months, but I kept skipping over it 'cause it's a little weird (but in a good way). Well, I think it's about time I finally get it on here.
I think this is the only Handsome Furs song I've heard, but man do I dig it. It's got the lead singer of Wolf Parade...a band I could never get into...but this works so much more for me. Definitely falls in the same realm as Hot Fuss-era The Killers.
Another one of those indie "supergroup" type collaborations, combining the talents of the lead singers of The Delta Spirit, Deer Tick, and Dawes. I really only know The Delta Spirit, though I know I've heard some Deer Tick in the past. I'll have to investigate Dawes at some point. Anyway, this is a nice little rocker with a folksy tinge.
Middle Brother - Me Me Me
ps - the things you see at the beach....oh boy....
I know it's not particularly well regarded in relative to the majority of Outkast's discography, but there's a lot of stuff I like on Idlewild...particularly this one...
Outkast - Idlewild Blue
ps - i didn't think the movie was all that bad...just a bit too big for its britches.
I was going to comment on how much this song sounds like it would fit perfectly on the first Islands album, and lo and behold, Nick Thorburn (aka Nick Diamonds), the Islands frontman, is one of the members of this indie-pop "supergroup" (with other members coming from Modest Mouse and Man Man). I need to check out more of their stuff.
Mister Heavenly - Pineapple Girl
ps - 8 loads of laundry = $12.50 spent (in quarters) in my crappy ass apt building machines
I never really cared for The Walkmen before this song, and who knows if I'll care for them after....but this is a good one. Really, it might just even be the rock-out-chorus, but my ears perk up a little every time it comes on.
The Walkmen - Angela Surf City
ps - finally watched the first film in the red riding trilogy. i was hoping for more...
Apparently this is the solo project from the drummer of The Killers. I think I'd rather listen to this than any of the solo stuff I've heard from Brandon Flowers...which is 2 songs...
Big Talk - Getaways
ps - i'm finally starting to hate myself for watching jersey shore.
