Tonight I was that douchey guy complaining about the band not playing enough of their "old stuff". That band was OK Go....a band that in the mid-2000's was among my favorites. Sadly, their setlist was heavy on their "newer stuff"... a 2010 album, on which I can't find one song I particularly care about, and a recently released EP, which I'm not loving either. So, yes, I became that guy. Somehow, though, they still managed to put on a really fun show in their crazy creative OK Go way.
Let's honor their "good stuff"...
OK Go - You're So Damn Hot
ps - seriously, listen to their first 2 albums...they just get boring after that.
The only possible reason I can think of why this song didn't blow up in 2009 is it's slight similarity to Cage the Elephant's 'Ain't No Rest For the Wicked' released around the same time. This is good shit.
Crash Kings - Mountain Man
ps - if you go see once, do yourself a favor and get there 30 minutes early.
Today is Summerland '14! And my most anticipated band of the show... Spacehog. I'm sure they're only going to get to play for 20 minutes, but whatever... I haven't seen them since 2001 maybe? 'In the Meantime' is an all-time song for me...
This is maybe the only other Spacehog song you've ever heard...
As Summerland '14 approaches (Thursday, y'all!), I figured I'd post a song from each band leading up to the show. And in the spirit of this "blog", I'll post one that wasn't/isn't super popular.
Let's do it in order of least anticipated to most anticipated, so... sorry Soul Asylum. I like you, I really do, but you're up first.
This one had a short stint on the alt rock stations back in the day, but never reached the heights of 'Black Gold', 'Misery', 'Somebody to Shove' or 'Runaway Train'.
Critics
are SKEWERING AiH's latest album,NOW
+ 4EVA, with blurbs like:
"The result is one of the more
confidently presented, mostly inoffensive and ultimately inconsequential albums
in recent memory" [Paste]
and
"This half-baked record teeters on a constant
sonic sugar crash, unable to sustain energy or interest for prolonged periods."
[Under the Radar]
but with this being the 2nd song from this album that's made the FASotD, maybe
I'm missing something...
Sure this one steals (knowingly and intentionally) from the likes of Madonna,
Kylie and Robyn to name a few, but how can you not get swept away in it's
emphatic joy?
I can't remember if I came across this on a random internet radio station or through the 'related artists' suggestions on Spotify, but whomever was responsible for the introduction... many thanks!
Yes, I just posted Foo Fighters and John Fogerty doing this song last month, but I came across this cover the other day and instantly fell in love with it. I didn't even recognize it was 'Fortunate Son' until the chorus. Love what Mr. Blacc did with it.
Aloe Blacc - Fortunate Son
ps - sadly, need for speed was not a very good movie.
